I began freelancing in 2009 after a couple of years working in design studios. As a cocky twenty-something, I thought I knew it all. In reality, I knew next to nothing.
My freelance business (if you could even call it that) lacked vision and purpose. Nothing underpinned my daily activities, so I was swashed around like a ship lost at sea. I yearned for a sense of direction, something to work toward, but ultimately I ended up back in a full-time job.
My breakthrough came several years later when I immersed myself in a world of learning and personal development. I soon realised that I lacked some core attributes needed to be successful in business: optimism, confidence and a sense of purpose. I studied and practiced and improved, and I soon developed a web design business that became my biggest professional achievement to date.
For years, I felt that something was missing. But what? Once I began to realise my self-worth and understand the impact of my work in the world, I found my confidence. This helped unlock many possibilities that had previously seemed unreachable. I discovered a sense of purpose in my work which led to a much more fulfilling career in the design industry.
My belief is that with more fulfilled and happy people, the creative sector can produce better work. The net affect of this is a better world for all.
